The Basic Therapeutic Massage Program
prepares students to become successful
practicing body workers.
The Basic Therapeutic Massage Program teaches
the art and science of massage therapy, while
also teaching sound
business practices which prepare students for
success in the marketplace.
In the Basic Therapeutic Massage Program,
students learn light energy work as well as
deep-tissue modalities, and how to treat
specific pain and dysfunction.
Students learn basic massage theory and
technique through traditional Swedish massage.
Students are taught an Eastern paradigm of body
therapies which include shiatsu, and
Acupressure. Students also learn contemporary
modalities such as Deep-Tissue bodywork,
Trigger-point therapy, Sports massage,
Facilitated Stretching, Injury massage, Seated
massage, and Infant massage.
Integrated with the massage therapy and
bodywork training are remedial exercises,
passive stretching, body awareness, relaxation
techniques, and body mechanics. To further
support good body mechanics, students receive a
course in movement of the massage therapist. In
all bodywork modality classes, students are
coached in the best use of their own bodies
while doing the work. It is possible that a
therapist can actually be energized and gain
vitality as a result of the work. We endeavor to
create this experience for our students.

Anatomy & Physiology.
Redding School of Massage not only prepares
students to become proficient body workers but
also trains students to become successful in the
marketplace, either as a sole practitioner, an
independent contractor, or an employee.
As a part of the Basic Massage therapy
Program curriculum, students complete a
comprehensive professional Development course.
This course includes techniques of enrollment,
starting and operating a massage therapy
business, presentation, advertising, resume’
writing, job interviewing skills and the
integration of sound business practices. Each
student graduates with 200 hours of classroom &
hands-on application.
Anatomy & Physiology
this is a comprehensive course in structure and
function of the human body, emphasizing the
muscular and skeletal systems, designed
specifically for body workers.
Massage Therapy
This course students learn draping,
contraindications, the use of oils, and
functional theories and techniques of massage
therapy/bodywork such as a Swedish massage. This
course also teaches alternative strokes
utilizing their fists, elbows, knuckles, and
forearms. This course shows the student how to
work specific muscle groups and attachments.
This course also, teaches efficient movement
while conducting bodywork. Students learn how to
move more efficiently to reduce potential trauma
to their
own bodies.
Professional Development
This course prepares students to build a
clientele, create a successful business, and/ or
secure job placement. It present current
industry trends to assist students in career
choices. It instructs students in development of
effective résumé's. This course is designed to
represent the professional job market. Through
this course students learn customer service,
promptness, efficient use of time, and
perfecting a 60 minute session of bodywork. Deep
Tissue— This course is designed to tech
structural and functional changes in the body
through deep-tissue manipulation. Students are
taught to “see” structural imbalances that
contribute to pain and dysfunction and rebalance
the body structure through the use of
deep-tissue bodywork techniques.
Injury Massage
Students learn to identify various types of
injuries, their manifestations, symptoms, and
different massage techniques utilized in
treatment.
Facilitated Stretching
Students learn to stretch major muscle groups to
promote flexibility and coordination.
Infant & Pre/Post Natal Massage
Students learn infant massage using Swedish
massage. This course also teaches students how
to work with women in the pre– and post– natal
stages.
Reflexology
Students learn to manipulate reflex areas in
hands and feet which correspond to organs and
specific areas of the body. This course assists
students in understanding how structure and
function are interrelated and how bodywork
affects the entire organism.
Shiatsu
Students learn this Japanese form of bodywork to
balance the energies of the body in order to
promote healing and wellness for their clients.
This modality incorporates acupressure, soft
tissue manipulation, palpation of major
meridians, stretching, and range of motion
exercises.
Trigger Point Therapy
Students learn to locate and identify trigger
points found in the body. These points are used
to develop therapeutic procedures to treat
myofascial pain and dysfunction.
Seated Massage
Students learn a ten-to twenty-minute bodywork
session for fully clothed clients. The massage
is typically a combination of Swedish ,
deep-tissue, and trigger point therapies.
Clinical Assessment and Protocol
Students learn how to effectively conduct client
interviews, design treatment protocols, and
document progress. Students observe modality
instructors taking a client through full session
including interview, assessment, treatment, and
closure. Students also participate in a panel
discussion presenting case studies to the
instructors for professional guidance.
Aromatherapy
Teaches student to history, definitions,
methods, and contradictions of aromatherapy. The
students will learn applications and uses of a
variety of essential oils and how to integrate
their uses into full body massages.
Sports Massage
Sports massage prepares students to address
basic needs of athletes. Techniques include
pressure point massage, friction massage,
petrissage, facilitated stretching, compression,
range of motion exercises, and stretches.
Multiple techniques are taught to enhance
athletic performance, prevent injury, and
decrease recovery time. Students learn different
protocols for post event massage. This course
teaches students to work on athletes during
breaks in training (1 to 5 minutes up to 3
hours). Students learn protocols for massage on
days off, during multi-day competitions, and
after completion of competitions. Students learn
protocols for pre-event massage including
warm-up massage, pre-event fever and apathy
massage, warming massage, and mobilizing
massage.
